6fusion Launches Cloud Resource Meter for VMware vSphere
February 13, 2012
For enterprises considering shifting their technology to the cloud, determining the costs involved is a key consideration and figuring out which IT resources are used most and by whom is critical to the equation.
This week at Cloud Connect in Santa Clara, Calif., utility-metered cloud infrastructure management software provider 6fusion will preview its 6fusion Cloud Resource Meter for VMwarevSphere. 6fusion’s metering algorithm, the Workload Allocation Cube (WAC (News - Alert)), regulates the way cloud infrastructure is metered both for suppliers and consumers.
“6fusion’s vision is to create the first truly global utility for cloud computing,” John Cowan, 6fusion co-founder and CEO, said in a company statement. “Our new Cloud Meter for VMware vSphere makes it possible for enterprise customers to easily understand and compare the cost of running workloads internally or in the cloud regardless of country or region of the world.”
The UC6 web-based console federates private data center and third-party cloud operators, providing a single console to allow IT organizations to access, meter, manage and ultimately optimize hybrid cloud infrastructures, company officials said.
The Cloud Resource Meter allows enterprises to gauge the costs of running in the cloud before deployment and bill (or charge back) internal departments or customers for use of compute resources and also allocates compute resources by determining optimal hardware requirements for new and existing projects in public or private clouds.
In addition, the meter can generate real time and historical workload meter reports of compute resource consumption, allowing for efficiency checks and any necessary administrative adjustments, according to 6fusion.
The Cloud Resource Meter is an asset to the tech industry as a whole, as companies attempt to break down the costs associated with moving to the cloud, according to John Abbott, chief analyst at 451 Research.
“6fusion is directly addressing the industry’s evolution toward the consumption based pricing model, which VMware CEO Paul Maritz affirmed during VMworld in Copenhagen last October,” Abbott said. “The Cloud Resource Meter seeks to answer one of the industry’s biggest questions: how much does cloud computing really cost?"
The Cloud Resource Meter will be available for download on the VMware Solution Exchange and 6fusion’s website upon final release. To pre-register for the tool, click here.
