Nimsoft Survey Shows Growing Embrace of MSPs by Large and Mid-Sized Companies
May 23, 2011
Nimsoft has announced the results of its Enterprise Requirements for MSPs 2011 survey, showing the growing embrace of managed service providers (MSPs) by large and mid-sized organizations throughout the country. The survey was conducted in association with Enterprise Management Associates (EMA).
Participants in the survey were currently engaged with an MSP, planning to engage with one or had used MSP services in the past. The surveyors collected responses, experiences and opinions from a number of professionals, including executives, mid-level managers and individual IT contributors.
IT professionals responded that their top three motivators for engaging an MSP were the opportunity to reduce costs, with 41 percent response. Other factors were access to improved technical expertise and depth, with 37 percent choosing, while 36 percent chose the ability to better focus on their core business. Nearly one-third of respondents (half of all the surveyed IT executives) said they could envision a time when all their IT would be managed by MSPs.
The survey also found that the most common management functions outsourced to MSPs are storage/recovery at 56 percent and service desk/help desk at 44 percent. Service desk/help desk is the most common priority for those planning additional MSP outsourcing of management functions. The majority of respondents currently engaged with an MSP said that virtual servers (at 68 percent), data center infrastructure (61 percent) and physical servers (56 percent) are under MSP management.
“The survey clearly demonstrates that MSPs are extremely attractive partners for IT organizations that are under growing pressure to do more with less,” said Phil LaForge, vice president of the Nimsoft service provider business. “As they continue to gain market momentum, MSPs will keep evolving their capabilities to offer clients an even more robust range of high-value management services.”
“In general, the research indicated a broad existing practice and future interest in use of MSPs across a number of technology and organization areas,” said Jim Frey, EMA managing research director. ”We recommend that any organization seeking to balance business priorities against near-term and long-term operating costs consider MSPs, either as a means to supplement existing staff and organizations or as a primary approach to operations.”
